Coastal fen-and lake deposits enclose sand layers that record at least three Holocene tsunamis at the Shetland Islands. The oldest is the well-known Storegga tsunami (ca 8100 cal yr BP), which at the Shetlands invaded coastal lakes and ran up peaty hillsides where it deposited sand layers up to 9.2 m above present high tide level. Because sea level at ca 8100 cal yr BP was at least 10-15 m below present day sea level, the runup exceeded 20 m. In two lakes, we also found deposits from a younger tsunami dated to ca 5500 cal yr BP. The sediment facies are similar to those of the Storegga tsunami-rip-up clasts, sand layers, re-deposited material and marine diatoms. Runup was probably more than 10 m. Yet another sand layer in peat outcrops dates to ca 1500 cal yr BP. This sand layer thins and fines inland and was found at two sites 40 km apart and traced to ca 5-6 m above present high tide. The oldest tsunami was generated by the Storegga slide on the Norwegian continental slope. We do not know what triggered the two younger events.

The objective of this work was to contribute to the knowledge of microphytobenthos in the Adriatic Sea, by studying for the first time the benthic diatom communities in Neum Bay in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For this purpose, the benthic diatoms naturally growing on stones and macroalgae were identified at one station in the small semi-enclosed oligotrophic Neum Bay during 2010 and 2011. A total of 24 samples were collected at two different depths, 0.5 m and 8 m, and analysed with light and scanning electron microscopy. Altogether, 425 pennate and 58 centric taxa (species and infraspecific taxa) belonging to 60 families and 115 genera were noted. Genera with the greatest number of taxa were: Mastogloia (46 taxa), Navicula (36), Diploneis (35), Nitzschia (34), Amphora (31), Cocconeis (27), Achnanthes (14), Halamphora (12), Lyrella (11), and Surirella and Licmophora (10 each). Amphora bigibba var. interrupta and Cocconeis scutellum were the most frequent taxa, being present in 87.5% of the samples. In total, 142 taxa were found only once (sporadic taxa). Although benthic diatom richness is high in the bay, taxa are apparently not distributed evenly temporally. Consistent quantitative and qualitative data are still needed for a better determination of the seasonal and spatial changes of the epilithic assemblages in the region. Cilj rada bio je doprinijeti poznavanju mikrofitobentosa u Jadranskom moru istražujući po prvi put bentoske dijatomejske zajednice u Neumskom zaljevu u Bosni i Hercegovini. Bentoske dijatomeje su određene na jednoj postaji u poluzatvorenom oligotrofnom Neumskom zaljevu 2010. i 2011. Sakupljeno je 24 uzoraka na dubinama 0,5 i 8 m, a analizirani su s pomoću svjetlosnog i skenirajućeg elektronskog mikroskopa. U uzorcima je utvrđeno 425 penatnih i 58 centričnih svojti (vrsta i nižih taksonomskih kategorija) dijatomeja unutar 60 porodica i 115 rodova. Najveći broj svojti nađen je unutar sljedećih rodova: Mastogloia (46 svojti), Navicula (36), Diploneis (35), Nitzschia (34), Amphora (31), Cocconeis (27), Achnanthes (14), Halamphora (12), Lyrella (11) te Surirella i Licmophora (svaki po 10 svojti). Najčešće svojte su Amphora bigibba var. interrupta i Cocconeis scutellum s 87,5% učestalosti u ukupnom broju uzoraka. Utvrđene su 142 sporadične svojte (utvrđene u samo jednom uzorku). Iako je broj svojti relativno visok, nije utvrđena pravilnost u njihovoj vremenskoj raspodjeli. Abstract:Mountain lakes have special importance in the neo-and palaeolimnology. Th e diatom fl ora of mountain regions of Europe has been studied in detail, but less attention was paid to the Romanian part of the Carpathians. Siliceous algae of mountain lakes (1,740-2,122 m a.s.l.) were studied in the Retezat Mts (South Carpathians, Romania). Sediment samples were collected in the deepest points of twenty-three pristine lakes between 2011 and 2014. A total of 152 species and intraspecifi c diatom taxa were found during this study (excluding the representatives of the two most diverse diatom genera Eunotia and Pinnularia). Altogether 140 taxa were listed and nomenclaturally checked from the previously published results. 79 common species and some rarely reported taxa are illustrated by means of light-(LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), and 40 other are presented here only with LM images. A partial diatom checklist is presented with 217 items, 80 of them have been recently recorded for the Retezat Mountains. Th is compilation focuses on small celled (< 20 μm) diatoms. Th e main aim is to help the identifi cation to the hardly visible, lightly silicifi cied and recently described forms, instead of repeating the earlier published data. Th is guide consist of a detailed light and scanning electron microscopy documentation of the diatom fl ora, based on 752 LM and 188 SEM pictures. New Humidophila and Staurosira taxa are presented and a new combination is proposed for Achnanthes helvetica var. minor. Th e detailed, illustrated guide hopefully will be a useful manual for ecological and palaeoecological surveys in the future.
