There is a vast amount of literature concerning the integration of action and cognition. Although this broad research area is of great interest for many disciplines like sports, psychology and cognitive neuroscience, only a few attempts tried to bring together different perspectives so far. Our goal is to provide a perspective to spark a debate across theoretical borders and integration of different disciplines via psychophysiology. In order to boost advances in this research field it is not only necessary to become aware of the different areas that are relevant but also to consider methodological aspects and challenges. We briefly describe the most relevant theoretical accounts to the question of how internal and external information processes or factors interact and, based on this, argue that research programs should consider the three dimensions: (a) dynamics of movements; (b) multivariate measures and; (c) dynamic statistical parameters. Only with an extended perspective on theoretical and methodological accounts, one would be able to integrate the dynamics of actions into theoretical advances.

Non-parametric and distribution-free two-sample tests have been the foundation of many change point detection algorithms. However, randomness in the test statistic as a function of time makes them susceptible to false positives and localization ambiguity. We address these issues by deriving and applying filters matched to the expected temporal signatures of a change for various sliding window, two-sample tests under IID assumptions on the data. These filters are derived asymptotically with respect to the window size for the Wasserstein quantile test, the Wasserstein-1 distance test, Maximum Mean Discrepancy squared (MMD 2 ), and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test. The matched filters are shown to have two important properties. First, they are distribution-free, and thus can be applied without prior knowledge of the underlying data distributions. Second, they are peak-preserving, which allows the filtered signal produced by our methods to maintain expected statistical significance. Through experiments on synthetic data as well as activity recognition benchmarks, we demonstrate the utility of this approach for mitigating false positives and improving the test precision. Our method allows for the localization of change points without the use of ad-hoc post-processing to remove redundant detections common to current methods. We further highlight the performance of statistical tests based on the Quantile-Quantile (Q-Q) function and show how the invariance property of the Q-Q function to order-preserving transformations allows these tests to detect change points of different scales with a single threshold within the same dataset.

Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is an emerging noninvasive biomedical imaging modality that can be used for visualizing the structure and function of brain in high resolution. Here we report an application of PAT to imaging intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in a mouse model. In vivo photoacoustic images were obtained in mice with right basal ganglia hemorrhage induced by microinjection of collagenase. With multi-spectral light excitation, cortical vascular network was clearly revealed at 532 nm, and ICH associated hematoma lesions and perihemmatoma regions were accurately mapped over time at 750 nm and 875 nm, respectively. Our results suggest that PAT provides a unique tool for visualizing hemodynamics involved in brain diseases such as ICH.
