British Ornithologists' Club meetings in 2020 As previously announced, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic the 2020 meetings programme has had to be substantially adjusted. The current situation is that Prof. Diamond's talk, in conjunction with the Linnean Society has been deferred, subject to his availability, until a date in 2021. We are pleased that the 21 September meeting will proceed via Zoom video-conferencing. Dr Beth Okamura will give a presentation on How birds shape freshwater biodiversity, and will consider how our understanding of dispersal of freshwater invertebrates has improved since Darwin's day. Dr Okamura, who is a Merit Researcher at the Natural History Museum, London, and Professor in Aquatic Biology at Univ. of Reading, will focus on evidence for waterbird-mediated dispersal of freshwater animals that are poorly known but have substantial ecological and practical impacts. The talk scheduled for 16 November, planned in conjunction with the Linnean Society and at their premises, is intended to be by Prof. Jon Fjeldså, Univ. of Copenhagen, on evolution of passerine birds. This talk had been designed to celebrate the 1,000th evening meeting of the BOC but, should it go ahead, will now be slightly ahead of the anniversary given the forced cancellation of previous 2020 meetings! At present, we remain very hopeful that the event will occur on schedule via Zoom, but please keep checking the BOC and Linnean Society websites for updates. The White‐banded Tanager ( Neothraupis fasciata, Thraupidae) is an endemic bird species of the Cerrado (Cracraft, ; Pichorim, Silva, Rodrigo, & França, ), where it is widely distributed, occurring mainly in dense cerrado and grassy cerrado (Alves, ; Hilty & de Juana, ; Ridgely & Tudor, ; Sick, ). The species does not occur in highly disturbed areas (Tubelis & Cavalcanti, ) and seems to have a low dispersal capacity since it exhibits resident and territorial behaviors, with a mean dispersal distance of about 300 m per generation (Alves, ; Duca & Marini, ; Manica & Marini, ).…”

Understanding the genetic structure of a species is crucial for evolutionary biology research and species conservation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the genetic structure of Neothraupis fasciata in Brazilian savannas and to assess genetic differentiation of its disjunct population in the Amazonian savannas of the state of Amapá. Population genetic structure was assessed in relation to isolation by distance and landscape variables connected with habitat heterogeneity. The influences of factors, such as habitat fragmentation and core–periphery distribution, on genetic diversity were also examined. Data were derived from a set of microsatellite loci of adult individuals from nine localities: eight distributed across the Cerrado and one in the disjunct Amazonian savanna of Amapá. Analysis revealed moderate genetic diversity and moderate population genetic structure, with at least two genetic clusters, one of which is represented exclusively by the disjunct Amapá population. The genetic structure found is not the result of significant influences by geographical distance, habitat heterogeneity, or the core–periphery effect, nor by intense biome fragmentation due to anthropic action. The disjunct Amapá population exhibited a moderate level of genetic differentiation compared to the Cerrado population, suggesting that both can be considered distinct evolutionarily significant units for conservation purposes.
