A Cerebral Granular Cell Tumor in a Cat

Abstract: Abstract. A cerebral granular cell tumor is described in a 6-year-old, shorthaired, female cat. The tumor was observed above the corpus callosum and completely infiltrating the third ventricle. Histologic examination revealed that the tumor was characterized by large cells containing densely packed intracytoplasmic granules and expressed psammoma body-like patterns and cholesterinic degeneration. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed granular neoplastic cells that were diffusely and strongly vimentin-positive,… Show more

“…Deposition of cholesterol crystals is a feature frequently observed in feline meningiomas [24]. Particularly, the "granular-cell" subtype, whose meningeal origin is however on debate, shows remarkable deposits of cholesterol crystals in a sheet of pleomorphic, sometimes multinucleated, round PAS-positive granular cells [12]. In our case, the lesion was exclusively constituted by lipid-laden, PAS-negative, HAM-56-positive macrophages with many old and recent multifocal haemorrhages.…”

“…The presence of cholesterol clefts is a well-recognized feature of feline meningiomas; 12 however, they have also been documented in a case of feline meningeal granular cell neoplasia. 6 After the initial histopathologic assessment, meningeal granular cell neoplasia was also considered as a differential diagnosis. In the case reported by Mandara et al, 6 the granular cells were characterized by the presence of PAS-positive cytoplasmic granules inconsistently positive for S100 and were diffusely immunoreactive for vimentin and occasionally positive for progesterone receptor.…”

“…Granular cell tumours (GCTs) are rare neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis which have been reported in a variety of species including humans, horses, dogs, cats, ferrets and cockatiels (Patnaik 1993, Liu et al 2004, Higgins et al 2017. GCTs comprise a large number of neoplasms occurring both within the nervous system and extraneurally (Mandara et al 2006). Central nervous system (CNS) GCTs have been documented extensively in humans and rats (Yoshida et al 1997, Li et al 2016.…”
