“…This persistent disturbance to the benthic community from fishing may have altered the benthic fauna to form more resilient, disturbanceadapted communities (e.g. Kaiser et al 2000a,b); this proposition is partly supported by the few available long-term comparisons of early century and more recent benthic faunal composition (Rumohr & Kujawski 2000, Callaway et al 2007). Our results here suggest that even in areas that have been heavily fished for decades, infaunal benthic invertebrate communities may remain sensitive to increases in fishing intensity.…”

“…The positive correlation to trawling pressure was unexpected, as a previous study along the Kola transect showed a significant negative correlation between benthic biomass and bottom trawling (Denisenko 2001). Our findings probably relate to the fact that long-term bottom trawling changes the age and size spectrum of benthic communities from long-lived, large sized individuals to short-lived, smaller sized individuals and species (Callaway et al 2007), an effect also observed after ice scour disturbances (e.g. Conlan et al 1998).…”

“…Such species are dug out by the tickler chains and caught with the trawl. They are often difficult to assign to either an epi-or endobenthic lifestyle and were thus kept in the species list (similar to Callaway et al 2007). Table 2) appeared on all 14 cruises.…”

“…Subsequently, several studies of the epibenthos were performed covering the whole North Sea (Dyer et al 1983;Frauenheim et al 1989;Jennings et al 1999;Zühlke et al 2001;Callaway et al 2002Callaway et al , 2007Reiss et al 2010). Rees et al (1999) compared benthic in-and epifauna of an even larger research area, including parts of the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic and the Irish Sea in a period from 1992 to 1996.…”
