“…We then compared the time of appearance of new ICL1e dots to that of SAS-6, the earliest known marker of nascent basal bodies in Paramecium (Jerka-Dziadosz et al, 2012). In cells expressing both RFP-SAS-6 and GFP-ICL1e, the SAS-6 and ICL1e foci co-localise at all new single basal bodies (Fig.…”

“…This phenotype is similar to that reported for the knockdown of PtCEN3 (Ruiz et al, 2005), and for its homologue, Tetrahymena CEN2 (Vonderfecht et al, 2012), suggesting that Sfr13 and Cen2 may directly interact with each other. One intriguing possibility is that Sfr13 plays a role in the assembly or function of the newly identified anterior left filament (ALF), which is present at assembling basal bodies, requires PtCEN3 function in Paramecium, and may play a role in daughter basal body positioning (Jerka-Dziadosz et al, 2012). Some centrins and Sfi1 repeat proteins have been found in calcium responsive contractile structures, notably in the infraciliary lattice in Paramecium (Gogendeau et al, 2007).…”

“…The formation of the ALF structure coincides with new basal body assembly and had thus been suggested to promote the formation of new basal bodies (Jerka-Dziadosz et al, 2013). However, it appears that the primary function of ALF is to position basal bodies near the cell cortex (Jerka-Dziadosz et al, 2013) after their assembly.…”

“…For instance, the anterior left filament (ALF) (Fig. 2B-D) is a transient appendage that appears coincident with new basal body assembly and then disappears once the basal body docks at the cell cortex (Jerka-Dziadosz et al, 2013). ALF formation in Paramecium requires centrin-3, which is necessary for basal body positioning at the cortex.…”
