a b s t r a c tThe Atlas Mountains in Morocco are considered as type examples of intracontinental mountain chains, with high topography that contrasts with moderate crustal shortening and thickening. Whereas recent geological studies and geodynamic modelling suggest the existence of dynamic topography to explain this apparent contradiction, there is a lack of modern geophysical data at the crustal scale to corroborate this hypothesis. To address this deficiency, magnetotelluric data were recently acquired that image the electrical resistivity distribution of the crust from the Middle Atlas to the Anti-Atlas, crossing the tabular Moulouya plain and the High Atlas. All tectonic units show different, distinct and unique electrical signatures throughout the crust reflecting the tectonic history of development of each one. In the upper crust, electrical resistivity values and geometries can be associated to sediment sequences in the Moulouya and Anti-Atlas and to crustal scale fault systems in the High Atlas developed likely during Cenozoic times. In the lower crust, the low resistivity anomaly found below the Moulouya plain, together with other geophysical (low velocity anomaly, lack of earthquakes and minimum Bouguer anomaly) and geochemical (Neogene-Quaternary intraplate alkaline volcanic fields) evidences, infer the existence of a small degree of partial melt at the base of the crust. Resistivity values suggest a partial melt fraction of the order of 2-8%. The low resistivity anomaly found below the Anti-Atlas may be associated with a relict subduction of Precambrian oceanic sediments, or to precipitated minerals during the release of fluids from the mantle during the accretion of the Anti-Atlas to the West African Supercontinent during the Panafrican orogeny (ca. 685 Ma).

The catalogue by Grünthal et al. (J Seismol 13:517-541, 2009a) of earthquakes in central, northern, and north-western Europe with M w ≥3.5 (CENEC) has been expanded to cover also southern Europe and the Mediterranean area. It has also been extended in time . Due to the strongly increased seismicity in the new area, the threshold for events south of the latitude 44°N has here been set at M w ≥4.0, keeping the lower threshold in the northern catalogue part. This part has been updated with data from new and revised national and regional catalogues. The new Euro-Mediterranean Earthquake Catalogue (EMEC) is based on data from some 80 domestic catalogues and data files and over 100 special studies. Available original M w and M 0 data have been introduced. The analysis largely followed the lines of the Grünthal et al. (J Seismol 13:517-541, 2009a) study, i.e., fake and duplicate events were identified and removed, polygons were specified within each of which one or more of the catalogues or data files have validity, and existing magnitudes and intensities were converted to M w . Algorithms to compute M w are based on relations provided locally, or more commonly on those derived by Grünthal et al. (J Seismol 13:517-541, 2009a) or in the present study. In this study, we assess tsunami impact and building vulnerability in the harbour area of Tangier -Morocco. Tsunami impact is evaluated through performing highresolution inundation modelling. To assess buildings tsunami vulnerability, we use a geographic information system (GIS) multi-criteria approach based upon weight and classification factors. The methodology includes various steps: (i) identification of the most hazardous earthquake tsunamigenic sources, (ii) computation of highresolution digital elevation model, (iii) simulation of inundation, (iv) field survey to classify buildings and defence structures and (v) application of the GIS-based model to produce final vulnerability map. Results show the potential tsunami impact and vulnerability that Tangier coast might face due to the occurrence of a large tsunami event in the region. Inundation map indicates that a coastal area of over 4.5 km 2 is prone to tsunami flood with flow depths ranging from 0.5 to more than 6 m. Vulnerability map highlights different levels of expected buildings vulnerability to tsunami impact, which vary from "very high" for single-storey structures, located in the city harbour and along the sandy beach, to "low" for multi-storeys RC structures. Both inundation and vulnerability maps have important implications for decision makers and land use planning aiming to mitigate tsunami hazard in the North East Atlantic region.
