Thumbnails of archived web pages as they appear in common browsers such as Firefox or Chrome can be useful to convey the nature of a web page and how it has changed over time. However, creating thumbnails for all archived web pages is not feasible for large collections, both in terms of time to create the thumbnails and space to store them. Furthermore, at least for the purposes of initial exploration and collection understanding, people will likely only need a few dozen thumbnails and not thousands. In this paper, we develop different algorithms to optimize the thumbnail creation procedure for web archives based on information retrieval techniques. We study different features based on HTML text that correlate with changes in rendered thumbnails so we can know in advance which archived pages to use for thumbnails. We find that SimHash correlates with changes in the thumbnails (ρ = 0.59, p < 0.005). We propose different algorithms for thumbnail creation suitable for different applications, reducing the number of thumbnails to be generated to 9% -27% of the total size.

We introduce the concept of the Temporal Thumbnail, used to quickly convey information about the amount of time spent viewing specific areas of a virtual 3D model. Temporal Thumbnails allow for large amounts of time-based information collected from model viewing sessions to be rapidly visualized by collapsing the time dimension onto the space of the model, creating a characteristic impression of the overall interaction. We describe three techniques that implement the Temporal Thumbnail concept and present a study comparing these techniques to more traditional video and storyboard representations. The results suggest that Temporal Thumbnails have potential as an effective technique for quickly analyzing large amounts of viewing data. Practical and theoretical issues for visualization and representation are also discussed.

We present a novel multi-resolution point sample rendering algorithm for keyframe animations. The algorithm accepts triangle meshes of arbitrary topology as input which are animated by specifying different sets of vertices at keyframe positions. A multi-resolution representation consisting of prefiltered point samples and triangles is built to represent the animated mesh at different levels of detail. We introduce a novel sampling and stratification algorithm to efficiently generate suitable point sample sets for moving triangle meshes. Experimental results demonstrate that the new data structure can be used to render highly complex keyframe animations like crowd scenes in real-time.
