A case study of Precambrian to Eocene sediments’ hydrocarbon potential assessment in Central Indus Basin of Pakistan

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to analyze the architecture and hydrocarbon potential of Punjab Monocline and Sulaiman Foredeep tectonic zones of the Central Indus Basin, Pakistan. Many extensive geophysical studies have been conducted to explore the stratigraphic hydrocarbon traps in the study area. However, the subsurface tectonic heterogeneities do not provide simplicity to accurately analyze the architecture and the hydrocarbon potential, which is a challenge for geoscientists. Therefore, to identify the hydrocarbon producing reservoir, we have applied the acoustic impedance inversion interpretation tool along with rock physics analysis to a 2D seismic data set of the study area. Interpretation of seismic reflection profiles reveals a 0-4-s-thick sedimentary wedge beneath an angular unconformity. Gross thickness increases towards east. Rock physics have excellently discriminated the low-impedance gas sands and shale lithologies as given by the acoustic impedance inversion. Seismic inversion analysis revealed favorable low-impedance, high-porosity locations that could be hydrocarbon potential zones. Therefore, acoustic impedance inversion in conjunction with rock physics analysis can be helpful for detecting the remaining hydrocarbon potential zones. This work flow may be helpful to identify the remaining prospects through well development to extract more hydrocarbons with the least drilling cost.
