A Case Study Exploring Students’ Experiences in a Flipped Counseling Course

Abstract: Flipped learning is a teaching approach in which instructors distribute content outside of class and lead application activities in class. In this qualitative case study, the authors explored the experiences of students (N = 10) in a flipped counseling course and identified 3 themes: enjoyment, benefits, and learning inside and outside of the classroom.

“…Additionally, researchers examined students’ experiences in a flipped classroom (Merlin‐Knoblich & Camp, 2018) and conducted a formative evaluation of an elective advocacy course (Gonzalez, Fickling, Ong, Gray, & Waalkes, 2018). Scholars also conducted research on evaluating methods related to group counseling courses with a focus on growth groups.…”

“…Scholars examined efficacy of training programs for supervisors, focusing on training for state vocational rehabilitation supervisors (Herbert, Schultz, Lei, & Aydemir‐Döke, 2018) and school site supervisors (Merlin‐Knoblich, Harris, Chung, & Gareis, 2018) and in predoctoral supervision rotations (Harris, Case, & Sheppard, 2018). Waalkes, Benshoff, Stickl, Swindle, and Umstead (2018) examined doctoral students’ experiences in teacher preparation, finding that students reported a lack of intentionality and a need for stronger preparation in pedagogy and methods.…”

“…In counseling, researchers of teaching have considered their surface structure in various published studies. For example, the use of a specific movie (Moe et al, 2014), implementation of an experiential activity (Williams et al, 2015), participation in a mindfulness group (Bohecker et al, 2016), or utilization of a flipped classroom (Merlin-Knoblich & Camp, 2018). But it is the research question that guides the intent.…”

“…Counselor educators may also want to assess if their surface structure choices are well-received by students. For example, researchers considered students' perceptions of a flipped-classroom to determine if they were satisfied with their experience (Merlin-Knoblich & Camp, 2018). When developing a research question for assessing surface structure, researchers need to be mindful of their intent from the onset.…”
