“…8 However, this has not yet been confirmed in anorectal melanoma because it is a rare tumor. Hara et al 9 reported that the 5-year survival rate was more than 30% in patients who underwent APR, and had a tumor measuring less than 50 mm in diameter or the disease limited to the depth of the muscularis propria. Therefore, the staging system and the treatments should be established based on the tumor size or thickness, as with cutaneous melanomas.…”

“…The presence or absence of lymphatic metastasis has not demonstrated any significant difference in prognosis. The conditions for ensured long-term survival are: 1) maximum tumor diameter <5 cm, 2) wall invasion depth within the muscularis propria, and 3) extensive lymph node dissection regardless of the presence or absence of lymphatic metastasis [8] . In Japan, few studies have assessed the long-term survival of patients who have undergone local excision.…”

“…3'8 Hara et al also reported that 9 Japanese long-term survivors were all treated with abdominoperineal resection, and that in 8 of these patients with available pathologic records, tumors were less than 5 cm in size and the depth of invasion was limited to the muscularis propria. 4 The patient we are describing had a tumor measuring 2 cm in diameter, and tumor depth was within the submucosa. She survived for 7 years and 10 months after local excision.…”
