A case report of primary fibrosarcoma of the liver

Abstract: A 75-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of right hypochondrial pain. Echo sonography and computed tomography demonstrated a large tumor with irregular internal density in the right lobe of the liver. Angiography revealed a moderately hypervascular tumor. She was treated with transcatheter arterial embolization. Three weeks later, the tumor ruptured. She died of accompanying acute myocardial infarction seven months after the onset of the illness. Autopsy revealed primary fibrosarcoma of the… Show more

“…TAH has been associated with both SFT 5,8-10 and fi brosarcoma of the liver. [12][13][14][15][16] PET scan in the present patient did not demonstrate any areas of hypermetabolism, and thus excessive utilization of glucose by the tumor 20 was not the mechanism of the hypoglycemia. The evidence in our molecular analysis supports the systemic effect of pro-IGF2, produced and secreted by the tumor, as the etiology.…”

“…In this case the first histological examination showed a large right atrial mass attached to the lateral wall to be a fibroma with thrombus mass, but without signs of malignity. Only the histological and immunohistochemical findings (positive immunostaining with vimentin antibodies) performed after repeat surgery were compatible with a fibrosarcoma [3]. In the literature, the possibility of malign degeneration of a primary benign fibroma into a fibrosarcoma has been described and this is supported by our case and should be described by CMR images [4].…”

“…Primary fibrosarcoma of the liver is an extremely rare neoplasm [1][2][3][4][5]. In this case the first histological examination showed a large right atrial mass attached to the lateral wall to be a fibroma with thrombus mass, but without signs of malignity.…”

“…The purpose of this case report is to share information on a rare tumor of the liver, a primary fibrosarcoma, as up to the late seventies the literature about this entity was restricted to autopsy diagnosis [1]. To our knowledge there are case reports from various parts of the world [2, 3], but there are no series of cases of primary fibrosarcoma of the liver. Etiologically exposure to cadmium has been linked to carcinogenesis of this disease in animal models [4].…”

“…Though few reports recommend chemotherapy [9] in liver metastasis of retroperitoneal fibrosarcoma consisting of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, farmorubicin, and dacarbazine, there is no definite role as treatment for primary lesion of liver. Overall the prognosis reported by most of the authors is dismal [1, 2, 3, 10]. …”
