A Case Report of Multidisciplinary Treatment of an Adult Patient with Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate

Abstract: This is a case report about the successful orthodontic treatment of a bilateral cleft lip and palate patient by using a combination of bone grafting and subsequent prosthodontic rehabilitation. An adult patient with a bilateral cleft lip and palate presented with a concave profile, anterior and lateral crossbite, a markedly deep overbite, and residual bilateral alveolar clefts. His jaw movement patterns were unstable and irregular due to his collapsed bite. Orthodontic treatment with bilateral bone grafting im… Show more

“…Orthodontic treatment modalities, such as braces, aligners, and space management techniques, aim to guide the eruption of permanent teeth and correct their alignment within the cleft-affected arches. Coordination between the orthodontist and oral surgeon is crucial to plan and execute any necessary surgical interventions to aid tooth eruption or the extraction of retained deciduous teeth [ 8 ].…”

“…Patients with cleft lip and palate often suffer from esthetic, morphological, and functional problems in the dentofacial region. [7] A large number of patients suffer from poor self-esteem due to an unesthetic facial appearance. [8] Management of protruded premaxilla and excessive incisor display can be a confounding problem in adult BCLP cases.…”

“…In India, the average incidence of clefts of the lip and palate is 0.54 to 2.75 per live birth. 1 The population afflicted with clefts of the lip and palate presents with not only an aesthetic but also a functional handicap, 2 which, without any intervention, spells impending doom for the rest of their lives. Apart from the difficulties posed by unilateral cleft repair, treating bilateral cleft lip and palate presents a more noticeable and complex problem: the pre-maxillary segment, which, in conjunction with the prolabium devoid of muscle fibers 3 , when impacted by protrusion and rotation, intensifies the complications involved.…”
