A case report of forgotten double J stent with giant calculus formation from the renal pelvis to the bladder

Abstract: Double j stent is commonly used in urological procedures. Its main purpose is to afford the sufficient drainage from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder. Following increased usage of double-J stent, several consequences associated to it have been reported. In this work, we report on a case of “forgotten” double j stent for 1 year in a 32-year-old male patient who visited emergency department with bilateral flank pain, fever, and vomiting for a duration of 3 days. A double-J stent was detected in the plain … Show more

“…Double J (DJ) stents facilitate the urine drainage from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder in various urological conditions such as urinary tract obstruction, stenosis, and fistula [ 1 ]. DJ stents are a routine and straightforward process in urological practice and may perform via antegrade or retrograde approach [ 1 , 2 ]. Infection, stent irritation, stent migration, encrustation, and a forgotten stent are all risks associated with this procedure [ 3 ].…”

“…Indwelling ureteral DJ stent complications include irritative voiding symptoms, flank and suprapubic pain, vesicorenal reflux, stent malposition, hematuria, urinary tract infection, fever, stent encrustation, inadequate obstruction relief, stent migration, stent rupture, ureteral perforation, erosion, and fistulization [ 3 ]. Stent knotting is an extremely rare complication.…”
