A case of subfascial lipoma in the lateral space of neck: US and CT findings

Abstract: Lipomas in the head and neck region usually occur in the immediate subcutaneous tissue. They are extremely rare under the muscular band of neck. We present a case of a 53-year-old woman with a subfascial lipoma located in the anterior lateral space of neck. The diagnosis of the lesion was reached by clinical examination and confirmed by ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) imaging. The lesion with surrounding capsule formation and lipofibromatous changes underwent open surgery.Sommario I lipomi de… Show more

“…However, in our study, only 2 lesions were confined to the dermal layer and the others were appeared as a subcutaneous mass or a mass involving both dermal and subcutaneous layers. This discrepancy may have resulted from a with the adjacent subcutaneous fat (22)(23)(24). In our study, lipomas were more frequently assessed to have ill-defined margins compared to steatocystomas.…”

“…The typical ultrasound findings of lipoma are well-circumscribed mass with variable echogenicity compared with the surrounding soft tissue ( 14 ). Although lipomas usually have a well-defined appearance with an identifiable thin capsule, some may have an ill-defined margin that blends with the adjacent subcutaneous fat ( 22 23 24 ). In our study, lipomas were more frequently assessed to have ill-defined margins compared to steatocystomas.…”

“…Proper imaging studies is very important for definite diagnosis and treatment. Ultrasound has become the preferred imaging modality for lipoma due to its advantages of low cost, non-invasiveness and convenience [14] . Its basic performance is regular, mostly oval, with uniform echo and clear boundary, and there was usually no blood flow or a small amount of blood flow could be detected inside.…”

“…-вопрос, не имеющий однозначного ответа. При этом известно, что липомы могут различаться между собой по наличию истинной фиброз ной капсулы, от которой иногда зависят це лесообразность оперативного лечения и его объём [4]. Потому представляются важны ми дооперационные возможности наиболее простого в применении и наиболее широко распространённого диагностического мето да -эхографии, включая его традиционную серошкальную визуализацию и эластографию.…”
