A case of stercoral colitis with marked elevation of serum carcinoembryonic antigen

Abstract: It should be noted that the serum CEA level can become elevated in severe stercoral colitis. Marked elevation of the serum CEA level in stercoral colitis may suggest the necessity of surgery in patients with stercoral colitis.

“…To realize practical point-of-cure (POC) medical diagnosis, all-dielectric and plasmonic metasurfaces were coupled with microfluidic (MF) chips made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Cancer markers such as prostate specific antigen (PSA) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) , were detected in human serum with a total operation time of 3–5 h; the all-dielectric metasurfaces detected the target PSA of more than 1 ng/mL, which satisfies a diagnosis criterion of 4 ng/mL, while the plasmonic metasurfaces detected the target CEA of more than 5 ng/mL, which needs an improvement in sensitivity to satisfy a diagnosis criterion of 5 ng/mL. In the all-dielectric metasurfaces, , the limit of detection (LOD) of the target protein molecules by the resonant wavelength shift was approximately a few picomolars (pM) to tens of pM, taking into account the experimental configurations and conditions, whereas, in the plasmonic metasurfaces, , the LOD for CEA was approximately 30–60 pM. The LOD is less sensitive than that by commercially standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) that often claim to have a LOD of 1 pM or less; in the conventional ELISA, transmission at 450 nm is measured to evaluate the amount of enzyme products.…”
