A Case of Sexual Asphyxia Without Fatal Termination

Abstract: The sexual asphyxias have, in the past, often been described by forensic pathologists after an apparently accidental death has brought the condition to light. The following case is exceptional in that it came to light before a fatality occurred and suggests that intense self-punitive tendencies may play a part in some cases.

“…The patient gained control over the process by terminating the hanging short of physical harm. Edmondson (1972) reports another case of autoerotic asphyxia in which death did not ensue: "John was referred at the age of 14K He had been surprised in his bedroom by his mother, who found him lying on his back, clearly in the process of masturbating. He had rope passed around the end of his bed and then around his neck under his chin.…”

“…Due to equipment failures and loss of consciousness during this practice, accidental deaths sometimes occur. Once thought to be a phenomenon only practiced by men (Edmonson, 1972), nowcases of autoerotic asphyxiation, including fatalities, have been documented in women Byard & Bramwell, 1988;Danto, 1980;Hazelwood, Dietz, & Burgess, 1983;Sass, 1975).…”
