A Case of Laparoscopic Excision of a Huge Retroperitoneal Cystic Lymphangioma

Abstract: Retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor. Most patients eventually experience some symptoms that necessitate therapeutic intervention. Excision is the treatment of choice, and some cases of laparoscopic resection have been reported. We report another case of a huge retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma that was successfully excised laparoscopically with the SAND balloon catheter. Large cystic lymphangioma was downsized by puncturing and aspirated with the SAND balloon catheter. Laparoscopic sur… Show more

“…The treatment choice depends on the size of the lesion, anatomic localisation and potential complications. Radical surgical excision has been suggested as the treatment of choice,22 however, the location, size and associated adhesions of the mass may preclude complete excision and lead to a high recurrence rate 23. Current literature also demonstrates a high level of effectiveness for the non‐surgical treatment of lymphangiomas with percutaneous sclerotherapy 5.…”

“…However, this open procedure often results in greater postoperative pain and poor cosmetic appearance. With recent advances in surgical equipment and techniques, more minimally invasive procedures with laparoscopy for the treatment of large tumors are indicated [3] .…”
