A case of intramuscular myxoma presenting as a swollen shoulder: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionIntramuscular myxoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor. Myxomas most commonly occur in the heart. They may occur less frequently in aponeurotic tissues, bone, genitourinary tract, subcutaneous tissue and skin.Case presentationThe case described here is a 44-year-old Turkish woman who presented with the complaint of a swelling in her right shoulder. A preoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lobular contoured mass lesion in her deltoid muscle. The mass was marginally excised and pathology… Show more

“… 1 , 2 Stout’s 1948 definition refers to myxoma as, “a neoplasm composed of stellate cells set in a loose mucoid stroma through which course very delicate reticulin fibers in various directions.” 3 While the histologic criteria of myxoma are well-established, the etiology remains unclear. 1 Although the majority of myxomas occur in the heart, extracardiac myxomas do occur, and may be found either subcutaneously or embedded within muscle; intramuscular myxomas are generally found in the thigh, lower leg, or gluteal region, with an incidence of approximately 0.1 per 100,000. 1 , 4 7 …”

“…In the present case, the intramuscular myxoma was in the deltoid muscle. Such localization has only been published three times [ 5 – 7 ], but never in conjunction with bone lysis. This bone lysis is in fact very rare, and some odontogenic myxomas with gnathic bone lysis have been described [ 8 ] but they presented more aggressive proliferation with cortical lysis and the worst prognostics.…”
