A Case of Gemcitabine-Induced Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog and pyrimidine antimetabolite that inhibits RNA synthesis and is currently approved to treat a variety of cancers. It is considered relatively safe and is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects include myelosuppression and gastrointestinal side effects. Cardiac side effects from this medication are rare. A prior meta-analysis involving gemcitabine showed incidence estimates of ~1% for overall cardiovascular adverse events which includes myocardial… Show more

“…Gemcitabine is often utilized as an adjuvant chemotherapy agent [5], due to its relatively lower toxicity profile compared to other anticancer drugs, making it well-tolerated and considered safe [6]. While myelosuppression is the most common side effect, gemcitabine has been associated with gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea) and abnormalities in liver and renal function tests [7]. Moreover, rare Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) have been reported, including thrombotic microangiopathy [8], interstitial pneumonitis [9], arterial fibrillation [10], and Capillary Leak Syndrome (CLS) [11].…”
