A case of esophageal leiomyoma causing left atrial compression

Abstract: A 64-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic with progressive dyspnea (New York Heart Association class III) and fatigue for 3 months. Dysphagia for solids more than for liquids was present for 3 years. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated extrinsic left atrial compression and impaired left atrial filling because of the compression (Fig. 1). Esophagoscopy revealed a submucosal mass in the distal esophagus. Computed tomography of the chest (Fig. 2) and magnetic resonance imaging of the mediastinum reve… Show more

“…Cardiorespiratory symptoms are uncommon. Cakar et al 8 reported a patient with oesophageal leiomyoma presenting with progressive dyspnoea and fatigue; echocardiogram, CT scan and cardiac MRI demonstrated extrinsic left atrial compression and impaired left atrial filling that were relieved after enucleation of the mass via thoracotomy. Xu et al 9 reported a patient with a 2 cm oesophageal leiomyoma and swallowing-induced supraventricular tachycardia.…”

“…There is a report of a case of oesophageal leiomyoma pressing the left atrium of the heart and causing symptoms of dyspnoea and fatigue. The ailments were caused by obstructed flow of blood to the left atrium and the left ventricle [ 16 ]. Similarly, in the case under study the tumour closely adhered to the pericardium and the left lobe base, which required careful dissection of the lesion.…”
