A Case of Endocrine Cell Carcinoma Combined With Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Esophagus Resected by Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection

Abstract: : A 55 -year -old man with esophageal carcinoma received endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in en -bloc resection. Histopathological examination revealed an admixture of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and endocrine cell carcinoma (ECC) with invasion of the deep submucosa. Immunohistochemically, CD 56 and chromogranin A were positive for ECC. Small -cell, mediumcell, and large -cell type ECC were partly surrounded with SCC and partly formed the duct, presenting various patterns. After ESD, he received chemot… Show more

“…Characteristic endoscopic features of NEC include submucosal growth, which is usually covered by normal epithelium with or without an ulcerous lesion in the center [ 8 ]. Biopsy sometimes fails to reach any diagnosis of NEC before treatment [ 4 ]. In our case, the microvascular pattern showed irregular, fine, reticular blood vessels near the center of the lesion.…”

“…Histological diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma by biopsy is difficult for it generally presents as a submucosal tumor covered by non-neoplastic epithelium [2]. On the other hand, neuroendocrine carcinomas sometimes have mixed components of squamous and/or glandular cells, which often lead to misdiagnosis [3]. The standard management of esophageal neuroendocrine carcinomas has not yet been established owing to the paucity of available data.…”
