A Case of Donovanosis in Japan

Abstract: A 21-year-old woman had large, painless, genital ulcers during pregnancy. The biopsy specimen showed a dense infiltration of mononuclear cells throughout the whole dermis. The histological sections with slow Giemsa staining revealed purplish-blue colored intracytoplasmic Donovan bodies. The genital lesions rapidly improved with antibiotics. She and her husband had never traveled in endemic areas.
