A Case of Descending Colon Stenosis with the Possible Involvement of Diarrheagenic <i>Escherichia Coli</i> O25

Abstract

Colonstenosismayoccurforavarietyofreasons,butcasesinwhichitscauseisinfectiouscolitisare rare.Thecaseofapatientwhorequiredsurgeryforcolonstenosisfollowingcolitiscausedbydiarrhea-genicEscherichia coliO25ispresented. An83-year-oldwomanpresentedatourhospitalwithdiarrheaandabdominalpain.Testsdetected diarrheagenic E.coli O25. She was managed conservatively for infectious colitis and discharged on Day 83.Shesubsequentlydevelopedstenosisofthedescendingcolonthroughwhichanendoscopewasunable topass,andlaparoscopicpartialcolectomywasthereforeperformed.Therewasnopostoperativerecurrenceofthestenosis,andhersubsequentcoursehasbeenuneventful.Althoughnopreviouscaseofcolon stenosisduetodiarrheagenicE. coliO25alonehasbeenreported,itappearsthatthepatientdeveloped stenoticischemiccolitisasaresultofE. coliO25infection.
