A Case of Appendiceal Intussusception due to Early Cecal Cancer: Consideration of 198 Examples of Reports in Japan in the Past 42 Years

Abstract

Adult appendiceal intussusception is a relatively rare disease. We experienced a case of adult appendiceal intussusception caused by early cecal cancer.An 86-year-old woman, previously suspected with ileocecal intussusception, was admitted to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. Enhanced computed tomography showed an enhanced tumor and a target sign with a concentric structure in the distended ascending colon. We diagnosed appendiceal and ileocecal intussusception caused by a tumor prior to surgery. The patient had severe abdominal pain, and so an endoscopic reduction was not tried and an emergency operation was chosen. We performed a laparoscopy assisted ileocecal resection with D2 lymph node dissection. Pathological examination and diagnosis revealed carcinoma in adenoma in the cecum (TisN0M0, stage 0). We consider the diagnosis and treatment strategy for appendiceal intussusception with 198 examples of reports in Japan in the past 42 years.
