A Case of Acute Myopericarditis Associated WithMycoplasma PneumoniaeInfection in a Child

Abstract: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) primarily causes respiratory tract infections in persons aged 5-20 years. Tracheobronchitis and bronchopneumonia are the most commonly recognized clinical symptoms associated with M. pneumoniae infection. Complications of this infection are unusual; in particular, cardiac involvement is very rare and is generally accompanied by pneumonia. Nonrespiratory illness can therefore involve direct invasion by M. pneumoniae or autoimmune mechanisms, as suggested by the frequency of… Show more

“…Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is considered as a benign and self-limiting disease. However, it has been found that some children may progress to refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) after being treated with sufficient and long-term macrolide antibiotics in timely [ 2 ], which often leads to pulmonary necrosis and pleural effusion, which may not only be difficult to treat and costing, but also leave sequelae such as bronchiectasis, necrotizing pneumonia, bronchiolitis obliteransa and so on [ 3 – 7 ], thus affect the quality of life. Over-immune response of host plays an important role in the development of RMPP [ 8 , 9 ].…”

“…However, carditis due to Mycoplasma pneumoniaeis more frequent in adult population. Some cases of M. pneumoniae carditis are described in the literature: they concern adolescent and adult subjects [9][10][11][12] and more rarely children [13,14]. As a matter of fact, in a review of Paz and Potasman of 21 cases of Mycoplasma associated carditis, the mean age was 33 years [15].…”

“…Review of the literature shows very few cases of liver involvement secondary to Mycoplasma. One case of hepatitis without pneumonia was reported from Korea [6,7]. In addition, Mycoplasma associated encephalitis has been reported in two children after viral upper respiratory infection.…”
