A Case of a Human-Papillomavirus-60-Induced Wart with Clinical Appearance of Both Pigmented and Ridged Warts

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 60 infection is histologically associated with characteristic homogeneous intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. However, it remains unclear whether the virus is associated with cystic, pigmented or ridged plantar warts. We report a 51-year-old Japanese female with a HPV-60-induced plantar wart which showed the clinical appearance of both pigmented and ridged warts. Masson-Fontana staining revealed increased melanin granules in the epidermis of the wart. This observation suggests th… Show more

“…Gr-ICBs are eosinophilic granules which occur multiply in each cell [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]while Hg-ICBs are eosinophilic homogeneous substances which usually appear as a single inclusion in each cell and develop to fill almost the entire cytoplasm in the upper Malpighian layers, so displacing the nucleus laterally [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 16]. …”

“…1). The macroscopic features were quite different from those of HPV-1-induced myrmecia warts [2, 3, 4, 5]or punctate keratotic warts associated with HPV-63 [4, 5]but somewhat resembled those of HPV-2/-27/-57-induced common warts [7, 8]or HPV-4/-60/-65-induced pigmented warts [4, 6, 16]. However, no pig…”

“…Using primers specific for these viruses, we identified a putative novel type of γ-papillomavirus that is most closely related to, though very distinct from (69% homologous in the amplified L1 region), HPV60. The warts caused by HPV60 show diverse clinical presentations including pigmented warts [40,41,58,59], palmoplantar epidermoid cysts [60,61,62,63,64] and ridged warts [59,61,65], but lesions clinically and histologically resembling EV have not been reported previously.…”

“…It is quite possible that the eccrine ducts are targeted specifically by certain HPV types [8, 9]and that the other areas are targeted by other types in the deep rete ridges of the palmoplantar skin.…”
