A Campus Climate/Violence Survey’s Psychometrics and Findings

Abstract: Data from a campus climate/violence survey (CCS) include psychometric information for survey items/scales plus findings from a large state university to promote its usefulness for assessment of interpersonal violence/harassment. This CCS can thus be evaluated for its measurement and documented findings, allowing for benchmarking purposes. An innovative measurement strategy is introduced to comprehensively capture incidence of victimization types through streamlined questioning. Tables provide detailed data for… Show more

“…UCC has been engaging in numerous activities to address SGBV on their campus including policy formation, establishment of CEGRAD, and a formal response process that includes advocacy and connection with off-campus resources (e.g., healthcare, police) as needed and desired by survivors. Ideally, a campus climate survey would have been conducted before these activities to capture longitudinal changes in student knowledge and attitudes (Follingstad et al, 2021). However, to date, most campus climate surveys have focused on measuring knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in HICs such as the United States and Canada and have not focused on cultural or contextual adaptation to capture campus climate globally.…”

Ideally, a campus climate survey would have been conducted before these activities to capture longitudinal changes in student knowledge and attitudes (Follingstad et al, 2021) This campus climate survey also sought to capture victimization and perpetration behaviors. Although this study did not establish rates of sexual violence perpetration or victimization experienced by students at UCC, we did find a sizeable minority who reported being the victim of at least one form of intimate partner violence.…”

“…Establishing location as a potential parameter has implications for whether incidents happening during summers or on school breaks when the student is not at college are excluded. Additional data regarding the location of sexual assaults on college women has been collected by some researchers (e.g., Follingstad et al, 2021) and these data could be collected for more clearly evaluating incidents as Red Zone experiences.…”

Additional data regarding the location of sexual assaults on college women has been collected by some researchers (e.g., Follingstad et al, 2021) and these data could be collected for more clearly evaluating incidents as Red Zone experiences. A related issue is whether it is important to establish that sexual victimization incidents were perpetrated by that college's students and personnel (to include administration, staff, faculty) as part of the campus Red Zone phenomenon.…”

“…In the past few years, there have been occasional high-profile and horrific acts of violence on campus [ 1 ]. Statistical analysis shows that violent incidents on campus are rare [ 2 , 3 ]; although the incidence is extremely low, these incidents are indeed so terrible and painful that they seriously endanger campus security and social security. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen the management to maintain campus safety.…”
