A Call for Radical Reflexivity in Counseling Qualitative Research

Abstract: In this article, we provide an interdisciplinary overview of reflexive practice within qualitative research and discuss dominant views on reflexivity within qualitative counseling literature. We propose a new way to frame the reflexive process called radical reflexivity. Finally, we offer examples from our research experience and discuss implications.

“…Uniquely, across computational suicidology, broadly, and work tapping r/SuicideWatch, specifically, we embrace the intersubjective tensions and incisive potentials inherent to a radically reflexive AI-enabled methodology, in which investigators recognize their situatedness in relation to the unfolding research process. As such, the lead author (SJS) addressed RQ4 by continually reflecting upon and deconstructing their role in shaping the knowledge-creation cycle [58,61].…”

“…To claim and address my positionality and potential biases (Hays & Singh, 2023;Shaw et al, 2020), I used a journal and peer debriefer to provide an audit trail for my influence on my data (Hays & Singh, 2023). To accomplish this, I practiced radical reflexivity, which is an inductive, creative, and dynamic process that requires critically deconstructing the cyclical process of reflection into action (see Smith & Luke, 2021, 2023.…”

“…This process provided me with additional insights, which were of importance to me, as I was the sole researcher on the project. It was also essential as I navigated my evolving understanding of saturation based on the data and existing literature, given my commitment to radical reflexivity (Smith & Luke, 2021). Thus, saturation was achieved over a period of at least two iterations of interviews and member checks.…”

“…To honor this commitment, we also reviewed, discussed, and analyzed the differing perspectives, arguments, and actions identified in the scholarship, as well as by our external panel of experts in an effort to capture the complexity of the topic. Next, in an effort to embrace radical reflexivity, we engaged in the inductive and creative process outlined by Smith and Luke (2021), which allowed us to concretize and develop a CAS process that was transparent, collaborative, critical, and reflective of anti‐oppression. In doing so, we relied on our professional relationships and rapport with colleagues to have critical discussions regarding our social locations, values, worldviews, training, socialization, and biases, encouraging each other to center on an anti‐oppressive focus, minoritized perspectives, and the desire to disrupt oppressive forces, structures, and systems of power.…”
