A Call for Interfacing Measures of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Across the Transition of Care

Abstract: The ability to maintain functional status is an essential aspect of self-care for older adults. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) decline within hours of hospitalization and are often overlooked, underassessed, and underreported. The aim of this integrative review was to examine and compare methods used to assess IADLs to determine the best measure for use across the care continuum, especially during transitions of care. “…The ability to maintain functional status has been shown to be an essential aspect of self-care for older adults. The IADLs are often overlooked, underassessed, and underreported, and the Lawton and Brody scale to measure IADLs has been described to be an ideal standard practice [ 9 ]. The number of people ≥65 years is increasing and the association of PA with ADL and with IADL seems to be relevant in planning future PA interventions with the goal of improving daily life in old people.…”

“…These data were collected to characterise the sample and identify factors that may be shaping caregivers' experiences that could be explored in the interview. The scales are widely used to assess functioning in people with dementia and have established validity and reliability (Lawton and Brody, 1969;Graf, 2008;Koyfman and Finnell, 2019).…”
