A Cage-Related Foot Pad Dermatitis in Dwarf and Normal-Sized Single Comb White Leghorn Layers

Abstract: Studies were conducted to determine if wire cage floors were involved in producing a foot pad dermatitis in dwarf and normal-sized Single Comb White Leghorn layers. Dermatitis scores were found to be higher for dwarf birds reared in cages versus litter floors. The use of plastic-coated cage floor inserts and wooden perches reduced the incidence of dermatitis in caged dwarf birds. Normal-sized layers consistently exhibited a lower incidence of dermatitis than did dwarf hens.

“…DISCUSSION FPD, a purulent dermatitis with hyperkeratosis, erosion and ulceration [17,21,28], has a fairly long history. Since 1969, FPD has been observed in turkeys, broilers and layers, with discussion of some causal/inducing factors, such as litter materials and feedstuff composition, that may influence the litter moisture [1,4,6,16,17,23]. Chicken feet, including footpads, are parts of the chicken that are eaten in Asia; so, condemnation of feet with FPD causes economic losses.…”

“…The dermal changes may be steril or become the entrance for various bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Fusobact, necrophorum, Brucella abortus and others [16,17] . Many factors seem to contribute to the causes of this foot pad dermatitis mechanical insults due to the wire cage floors [2,10] or damp litter [4], the composition of diet particularly deficiencies of biotin and methionine [4], higher dietary energy intake resulting in a high body weight of the birds [10,12,15] and strain differences [11]. The use of plastic-coated floor inserts, perches or cushion floors has reduced the incidence of dermatitis in caged birds [2,10] .…”

But, ball abscessi of chickens occur also in farms offering an optimal environment and increased dietary levels of vitamin and trace mineral mixtures have appeared without effect on the foot pad dermatitis [11. While the literature in broiler hens is voluminous, the foot disease has been hardly described in experimental mammals kept in cages under similar conditions : pododermatitis caused by rusty wire floors has been observed in a guinea pig colony [ …”
