A Bunch-Like Tertiary Amine Grafted Polysulfone Membrane for VRFBs with Simultaneously High Proton Conductivity and Low Vanadium Ion Permeability

Abstract: Novel polysulfone membranes with bunch-like tertiary amine groups are synthesized with high ion selectivity and outstanding chemical stability for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The bunch-like tertiary amine groups simultaneously act as an ionic conductor for proton hopping and vanadium ion transport obstacles. The performance of the membrane is tuned via controlling the grafting degree of the chloromethylated polysulfone. The results show that membranes show increasing proton over vanadium ion (σ/p) s… Show more

“…Thus, the ion selectivity of p‐ PSF‐PVP reaches 10.63 ×10 7 S ⋅ min ⋅ cm −3 after 6 h with phosphoric acid treatment as shown in Figure b. The ion selectivity is significantly higher than that of the pristine PSF‐PVP membrane (6.67 ×10 7 S ⋅ min ⋅ cm −3 ) and commercial Nafion212 (2.26×10 7 S ⋅ min ⋅ cm −3 ) tested under the identical conditions …”

“…DMEA monomer has a tertiary amine group in its chemical structure. This weakly basic group (-NR 2 ) possess a lone pair of electrons which becomes protonated in the acidic electrolyte of VRFB [50]. The resulting -NR 2 H + moiety facilitates a labile proton, which can be transferred to another amine group participating in the Grotthus mechanism of proton hopping, contributing to the ionic conductivity [51].…”

“…The assembled VRFB showed a high CE of 98% and VE of 91%, and remained stable for 2000 h during the charge–discharge test at 80 mA cm −2 . To further enhance the ion selectivity, graphene oxide was incorporated into the PSF/PVP membrane 120b. The ion selectivity shows volcano shape against the content of GO in the range of 0.025% to 0.1% with peak of 2.2 × 10 7 S cm −3 min −1 at 0.05%.…”
