A Faraday isolator is an electromagnetic non-reciprocal device, a key element in photonics. It is required to shield electromagnetic sources against the effect of back-reflected light, as well as to limit the detrimental effect of back-propagating spontaneous emissions. A common isolator variant, the circulator, is widely used to obtain a complete separation between forward- and backward-propagating waves, thus enabling the realization of a desired transfer function in reflection only. Here we demonstrate a non-reciprocal terahertz Faraday isolator, operating on a bandwidth exceeding one decade of frequency, a necessary requirement to achieve isolation with the (few-cycle) pulses generated by broadband sources. The exploited medium allows a broadband rotation, up to 194°/T, obtained using a SrFe12O19 terahertz-transparent permanent magnet. This in turn enables the design of a stand-alone complete terahertz isolator without resorting to an external magnetic field bias, as opposed to all the optical isolators realized so far.

Bridge-type waveguide switches using vector-rotation elements can extend the number of switched ports from two to four by incorporating orthogonal mode transducers prior to a pair of final combining hybrid tees. Rotatable ferrite half-wave plates allow efficient selection of any desired amount of reciprocal vector rotation.This paper describes the operating principle of an SP4T switch using rotatable ferrite half-wave plates in a waveguide bridge, and analyzes bandwidth vs. isolation considerations. Measured data are presented for an X-Band engineering model switch capable of handling up to 100 Kw. peak rf power.

Aufgabe und Wirkungsweise eines Zirkulators mit Faraday-Dreher (nichtreziproker H^-Polarisationsdreher) werden kurz erläutert. Einige Wege zur Realisierung möglichst wenig frequenz-und temperaturabhängiger Drehwinkel im Faraday-Dreher und möglichst guter, breitbandiger Anpassung an allen Armen des Zirkulators werden beschrieben. Die Hinweise sind an einem praktisch ausgeführten Muster erprobt. Für die Verwendungszwecke als Richtungsleitung, Antennenweiche und Kanalweiche werden die gemessenen elektrischen Eigenschaften im Frequenzbereich um 7 GHz angegeben.Function and operation of a circulator with Faraday rotator (non-reciprocal Hu-polarization rotator) are briefly explained. Some ways are described for the realization of angles of rotation in the Faraday rotator with a minimum of dependence on frequency and temperature and for optimum wideband matching at all arms of the circulator. This information has been evaluated on. a practical prototype. For the application as isolator, antenna separating filter, and RF channel filter the measured electrical properties are stated in the frequency range around 7 Gc/s.
