A Brief Review on the Development of Alginate Extraction Process and Its Sustainability

Abstract: Alginate is an attractive marine resource-based biopolymer, which has been widely used in pharmaceutical, food and textile industries. This paper reviewed the latest development of the conventional and alternative processes for alginate extraction from brown seaweed. To improve extraction yield and product quality, various studies have been carried out to optimize the operation condition. Based on literature survey, the most commonly used protocol is soaking milled seaweed in 2% (w/v) formaldehyde, overnight, … Show more

“…Marine macroalgae biomass grows in abundance globally. Although cultivation of seaweed has not been widely investigated apart from south Asian region, worldwide macroalgae production already reached 34.5 million tonnes dry weight annually, indicating it is a suitable renewable biomass for biofuel production ( Saji et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Green alginate extraction techniques including ultrasound, microwave and enzyme assisted extractions are being researched but are expensive and possess scale-up challenges. 76 Overall, it can be surmised that alginate is a promising seed coating material. However, concerns related to (1) inhibited seed germination rates, (3) green extraction strategies and (2) the design of continuous and cost-effective strategies for synthesizing alginate coatings need to be addressed.…”
