A brief review of solar concentrators

Abstract: For efficient and cost effective utilization Solar energy solar concentrators are vital. These are finding increasing applications in many solar energy applications such as concentrated solar photovoltaics, solar steam power generation, solar energy storage, solar cooking etc.. In this brief review we discuss the various types of solar concentrators, their current applications, advantages and disadvantages. We also suggest future new applications of solar concentrators.

“…Generations of electrical energy from the conventional fuels being listed above are still facing challenges till date. Because, supplies are extravagantly high, quickly depleting, and politically controlled, it is highly improbable that they will be used extensively in nations without abundant domestic reserves [6,7].…”

“…There are some distinct designs of solar concentrators that have shown importance Contribution to solar energy [3]. The most novel design of solar concentrators is the compound parabolic concentrators (CPC)divided into two types namely: 2-dimensionaland 3-dimensional configuration [4]. The efficiency of acceptance of diffuse radiation in this type is the greatest compared to other solar concentrates(CPC) which is a non-imaging concentrator and that which consists of two parabolas.…”

“…18 A parabolic concentrator of diameter ∼2.6 ft. costs around $200. One day with the advent of technology it is expected that a large-sized parabolic mirror (imaging type) of diameter 4 to 6 m can be purchased at a cost of around $1500 to $2000.…”
