A Brief History of the Kaplan Turbine Invention

Abstract: One of the most important milestones in the history of hydropower is the invention of the Kaplan turbine. It is a machine stemming from the Francis turbine, which Viktor Kaplan was originally trying to improve. However, it gradually developed into the creation of a completely new solution of an impeller with an axial flow rate and adjustable blades. The first patent relating to the new invention dates from 1913. Shortly afterwards, the Kaplan turbine became the most widely used type of device for the use of lo… Show more

“…Kaplan turbine is a type of hydraulic power generation machinery widely used in large-flow and low-head hydropower stations. 1 Due to the cantilever structure of the blade of the Kaplan turbine runner, there must be a clearance between the top of the blade and the casing. 2 The fluid near the blade tip clearance is affected by the pressure difference between the blade pressure surface and the suction surface, which flows from the pressure surface to the suction surface through the blade tip clearance, forming a clearance leakage flow.…”

“…The axial flow turbine is generally suitable for hydropower stations with a low head and large flow rate [1]. It offers the advantages of high speed and efficiency under the condition of large flow rate variation [2]. At present, the axial flow turbine is one of the main types used for the development and utilization of hydropower resources in low-head sections.…”
