A Brief Assessment of the Interpersonal Circumplex

Abstract: Three studies are presented that demonstrate the psychometric properties and initial validation of the International Personality Item Pool-Interpersonal Circumplex (IPIP-IPC). The IPIP-IPC is a brief 32-item assessment of the interpersonal cirucmplex designed to be used when time is limited or when participants have difficulty understanding the adjective items used in more traditional assessments of the interpersonal circumplex. In Study 1, 501 participants were examined to develop the IPIP-IPC and demonstrate… Show more

“…Warmth is characterized by nurturance, communion, love, and affiliation, and dominance is characterized by status and agency (Gurtman, 1993). Markey and Markey (2009) confirmed the circular structure of the IPIP-IPC across three samples. The authors reported that the IPIP-IPC demonstrated convergent validity in its relationships with the five-factor model of personality and that it maintained the psychometric properties of longer interperso nal circumplex measures.…”

“…The IPIP-IPC (Markey & Markey, 2009) is a 32-item measure of the interpersonal circumplex. The interpersonal circumplex is a circular array of personality characteristics that consists of four quadrants formed by the dimensions of dominance and warmth: two traits that are thought to be important for understanding interpersonal interactions (Gurtman, 1993;Leary, 1957).…”

“…The IPIP-IPC assesses the interpersonal circumplex (Wiggins, 1979); it has been shown to possess a circular structure and has shown good convergent validity with other measures of interpersonal dimensions. In Study 1, we utilized the two global subscales reflecting the two main circumplex dimensions (i.e., Dominance and Warmth), which were calculated using a formula suggested by Markey and Markey (2010). Internal consistency for the Dominance (α = .83) and Warmth (α = .85) subscales in Sample 1 were very good.…”
