A Branch-and-Price-and-Cut Algorithm for the Integrated Scheduling and Rostering Problem of Bus Drivers

Abstract: In the transportation industry, crew management is typically decomposed into two phases: crew scheduling and crew rostering. Due to the complexity of scheduling and rostering, bus transportation is not an exception and many relevant studies do not consider both procedures simultaneously. However, such a decomposition can yield inferior schedules/rosters. To address this issue, this paper proposes an integrated scheduling and rostering model for bus drivers and devises a branch-and-price-and-cut (BPC) algorithm… Show more

“…This approach produced the best results for a large number of INRC-II instances, as shown in the recent experimental comparison carried out by Ceschia, Guido, and Schaerf [CGS20]. In his PhD thesis, Lensing [Len20] reports that his implementation of this rotation decomposition is outperformed by the classical roster decomposition on the benchmark proposed by Curtois and Qu [CQ14], where most constraints are hard.…”

“…Kang et al (2019) developed an integer linear programming model to deal with the bus-and driver-scheduling problems with mealtime windows for a single public transport bus route [24]. Lin et al (2020) proposed an integrated scheduling and rostering model for bus drivers and devised a branch-and-price-and-cut algorithm to solve the complex problem [25]. Rahman et al (2020) presented an approach for rescheduling the bus crew's timetable in the event of late for relief and took the multi-agent system to adapt dynamic environments [26].…”
