Many researchers insist that computational methods will transform the historical profession, while an equally large number reject these claims as unwarranted hype. This study attempts to place the debate in historical and social context. The essay is divided into three parts. The first part offers a brief review of computational history. It asks whether the "computational turn" bears any resemblance to quantitative history and how it fits within the digital humanities. The second part describes the authors' recent attempts to apply computational methods to an existing project in the history of science using a standardized workflow. It demonstrates that each step of the workflow adds another layer of subjectivity. The third part reflects on what computational methods mean for the historical profession. It systematically reviews the positive aspects of computational history (open access, interdisciplinary collaboration, and new perspectives) as well as the negative aspects (inequality, fragility, and the threat of automation) and offers prescriptions based on the authors' experiences. T he digital revolution often evokes images of a technocratic future, but its impact on the past is equally profound. Computers have transformed not only the historical record but the historical profession as well. Historians have eagerly embraced digital tools and methods, and we now rely on computers for every single aspect of the trade, from collection and curation to analysis and interpretation. This is an approach used by historians (Donald 2012;Fischer 1976;Mullen 2019) and others, particularly those who write about Indigenous topics (Donald 2012), to structure writing in a way that can efficiently write complex phenomenon in a non-reductionist and decolonized fashion. 5 A braided approach weaves "analysis with narrative" (Mullen 2019, p. 384) and "juxtaposes diverse forms of texts" (Donald 2012, p. 53) as a way to ground and critically reveal complex content.…”

This paper provides an autoethnographic accounting and analysis of my own mystical experiences, called connection experiences in this paper. This account, which is structured around a description of my early experiences, attempts to weave together psychological, sociological, historical, and methodological themes into a coherent contribution that advances our understanding of connection experience. The paper includes an explication of the four stages of the research project that developed as a consequence of these experiences as well as an examination of the processes, tools (i.e., MediWiki), and emotional, psychological, professional, and scholarly challenges of collecting and analyzing the autoethnographic data of mystical experiences. The denouement of the paper is the presentation of a conceptual schema aimed at overcoming nomenclature confusion and providing a basis for description, analysis, and discussion of connection and connection experiences. The utility of the schema is demonstrated when it is used to provide a clear overview of my own connection experiences, and the connection experiences of others. In order to facilitate critical discussion of the conceptual framework, a glossary of terms developed and presented in this paper is provided at the end.

ZusammenfassungDie digitale Transformation prägt seit einigen Jahrzehnten die Art und Weise, wie Geschichtswissenschaft betrieben, geschrieben, verbreitet, diskutiert und gelehrt wird. Dabei ist die Spannbreite dessen, was sich unter dem Sammelbegriff „Digitale Geschichte“ summieren lässt, riesig: Sie reicht von digitalen Praktiken, wie sie im Computerzeitalter für alle Forschenden alltäglich geworden sind, über Digitalität als Thema, bis hin zum Einsatz digitaler Methoden und Werkzeuge für die historische Erkenntnisgewinnung. Das an den Rändern offene transdisziplinare Praxisfeld ist zudem allein durch technische Entwicklungen im ständigen Fluss. Sehr unterschiedlich sind folglich Einführungen in die digitale Geschichte oder in die Digital Humanities, von denen in diesem Beitrag einige deutsch-, englisch- und französischsprachige Bände besprochen werden. Neben einer Einordnung dieses speziellen Literaturgenres zwischen Theorie und Praxis liegt der Fokus dabei zum einen auf den Änderungen von Forschung, Lehre, Kommunikation und Publikation durch die Digitalität. Zum anderen werden gegenwärtige Diskussionen und Kontroversen in und um die digitale Geschichte skizziert, wie sie zugleich in anderen Publikationen verhandelt werden.
