“A body shape index” and its association with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus among Brazilian older adults: National Health Survey (2013)

Abstract: The aim was to evaluate the separate and joint association of abdominal adiposity indicators (a body shape index - ABSI, waist circumference - WC, waist-to-height ratio - WHtR) and body mass index (BMI) with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, in Brazilian older adults. Data from the 2013 Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS 2013) were used for the population aged 60 years or older (10,537 older adults). Arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus outcomes were self-reported and the following anthrop… Show more

“…First, the use of a summary measure of poor nutritional status was based on BMI, which has been shown to be an useful and reliable tool in large surveys. 36 Second, the Lipschitz nutritional status classification limits comparison of our results with those from other studies, although this cut-off has been validated and indicated for older adults. 29 Finally, edentulism and nutritional status were measured at baseline.…”

“…The components of the non-pharmacological treatment of depression with the lowest adherence in the sample studied were the control of the AC, weight control, and physical activity. Inadequate anthropometric measurements represent a cardiovascular risk and increase arterial pressure (16)(17) . Furthermore, these weight and abdominal circumference changes are related to physical inactivity, which is very common among participants.…”

“…In the bivariate analysis, p values <0.20 were considered for inclusion in the regression models. The waist-to-height ratio, waist-to-hip ratio, android/gynoid ratio and regional IMLC were converted to Z-score in the regression models using the following equation: Z-score = (individual anthropometric value -mean anthropometric value) / standard deviation [45].…”
