A BitTorrent Performance Evaluation Framework

Abstract: In the last decade, file sharing systems have generally been dominated by P2P solutions. Whereas e-mail and HTTP have been the killer apps of the earlier Internet, a large percentage of the current Internet backbone traffic is BitTorrent traffic [12]. BitTorrent has proven to be the perfect file sharing solution for a decentralized Internet, moving the burden from central servers to each individual station and maximizing network performance by enabling unused communication paths between clients.Although there … Show more

“…As reviewed in Section 2.2, many protocols are available for the P2P-based solution. The BT protocol was chosen due to the broad availability of the open source BT client programs, which include aria2c [76], BitTornado [34], Enhanced CTorrent [77], LFTP [78], qBittorrent [36], rTorrent [79], and Transmission [80]. In addition, the actively developed open source project, Libtorrent [81], provides a lot of libraries related to BT protocol.…”

“…[11] and [15] describe small-scale experiments, such as running tens of clients on PlanetLab. The work most closely related to ours has been presented in [1], [6] where a platform similar to our BTLab Controller is introduced, however, without the rich analysis tool set we developed. Moreover, the platform requires the direct instrumentation of clients, making it impossible to study closedsource clients such as μTorrent.…”

“…A large number of client implementations are available [16], making the BitTorrent protocol the largest contributor to the Internet traffic [6]. From the design perspective, the BitTorrent protocol is built around torrent files that include information about both the content to be distributed, and the bootstrapping process for node (peer) discovery.…”
