Abstract:The development of new solid supports for palladium has received a lot of interest lately. These catalysts have been tested in a range of cross-coupling reactions, such as Suzuki-Miyaura, Mizoroki-Heck, and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions, with good outcomes. Attaching the catalyst to a solid support simplifies the operations required in order to isolate and recycle the catalyst after a reaction has completed. Palladium on solid supports made of magnetic materials is particularly interesting since such catalysts can be removed very simply by utilizing an external magnet, which withholds the catalyst in the reaction vessel. This review will showcase some of the latest magnetic solid supports for palladium and highlight these catalysts' performance in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.

Palladium nanoparticles supported on polydopamine‐coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Pd/Fe3O4@PDA) were found to catalyze the Ullmann homocoupling of a wide variety of aryl halides, arylboronic acids and aryldiazonium salts in aqueous media in the presence of randomly methylated β‐cyclodextrin (RM‐β‐CD). The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by techniques such as TEM, SEM, EDX, XPS, ICP‐AES and XRD. The synthesized catalyst can be easily recovered magnetically and reused up to five cycles without any significant loss of activity. This is the first report demonstrating the use of magnetically recoverable catalyst for Ullmann homocoupling reactions of aryl halides, arylboronic acids and aryldiazonium salts in water.

The biomimetic concept to decipher the ‘enigma of metalloenzymes’ in integrating two metals in designing a heteronanostructure with multifunctional attributes seems inspiring. In this pursuit, we report a versatile route to Fe−Pd heteronanostructure based on the redox chemistry utilizing the galvanic potentials of the metals, in lieu of an external reducing agent used so far. The synergism between two metal centers has been delved into for multifaceted catalytic applications. The synthesized nanomaterial has been extensively characterized by techniques such as UV‐Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM‐EDX, HRTEM, BET, VSM, ICP and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The formation of the heteronanostructure with Fe and Pd is clearly evident from HRTEM image and EDS mapping analysis. Mössbauer spectra are consistent with the superparamagnetic nature of the material. Fe−Pd heteronanostructure showed excellent aqueous‐phase catalytic activities for Suzuki coupling reactions with challenging substrates like heteroaryl bromides and aryl chlorides, and reductions of 4‐nitrophenol to 4‐aminophenol and Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Interestingly, in all the three catalytic reactions, Fe−Pd heteronanostructure showed superior activity over its monometallic counterpart substantiating to the cooperative influence of the two metals. Low catalyst loading, shorter reaction times, ‘in water’ reactions for synthesis and catalysis and magnetic recyclability form the hallmark features of the heteronanostructure.
