Biofiltration is a superior method of pollution control technologies among the various physical, chemical and biological methods. This process uses active microorganisms and to degrade pollutants produce innocuous end products. Microbes present in the filter materials used in remove of contaminants from the air effectively. A total of 1386 bibliographic records from the Web of Science (WoS) database were extracted and analyzed to report the analysis of scientific state of the authors, journals, countries, and categories. Histcite and VoSviewer software’s are used for analyzing records. In the study, we have analyzed annual contribution, authorship pattern, type of document, language, degree of collaboration, Collaborative index, Co-author index, relative growth rate and doubling time, Bradfords law, h-index, subject wise, countries and co-occurrence keywords. The results indicate that USA and China are the most contributing countries in biofiltration. This study therefore, provides an extensive understanding about the trends and research patterns of biofilter of air efforts worldwide. Finally, research gaps and environment pollution issues are highlighted and the scope for future also discussed.

Biofiltration of air polluted with xylene vapors was carried out for nearly two years in a large laboratory-scale installation with a volume of the bed of expanded clay equal to 32 dm3. During the experiment, different xylene inlet concentrations were applied, within the range from 300 to over 1500 mg/m3 at a linear gas flow rate of 0.008, 0.016, and 0.033 m/s, as well as 0.12 and 0.24 dm3 of medium dispensed every 3 h on top of the bed. The progress of the process was followed by measuring the xylene concentration at the inlet and outlet of the column, column mass, and gas flow resistance. The capability to purify air polluted with xylene with an average efficiency of approx. 90% was demonstrated. The process was interrupted by a significant increase in gas flow resistance, caused by a large growth of biomass, resulting in an increase in the mass of the bed by more than 45%. Both intensive rinsing of the bed with a stream of water, causing its fluidization, and rinsing and mixing after removing the bed from the column allowed to reduce flow resistance to a value close to the initial one. To ensure the supply of biogenic elements, it was necessary to periodically spray the bed with a solution of the medium in an amount of up to about 0.1 dm3/h/m3 of purified air.

El presente trabajo explora y discute la deducción y aplicación de un modelo matemático genérico (Modelo de Interacción de Múltiples Continuos, MIMC) en la predicción del comportamiento dinámico de la eficiencia de un biofiltro de lecho fijo tratando tolueno. Se presenta una estrategia de solución numérica, incluyendo un caso de estudio de validación. Posteriormente se presentan estudios de variación de dos números adimensionales (Péclet y Sherwood) y su efecto sobre el comportamiento de la eficiencia del biofiltro. Para dos fases interactuando (Modelos Doble Continuos, MDC), tres niveles de sofisticación son contrastados, concluyendo que el fenómeno de crecimiento (comprendiendo desde el proceso de inoculación hasta la saturación del lecho) es crucial para realizar el diseño y modelamiento en sistemas de biofiltración al emplear MIMC’s. Con MDC 2 se logró un ER<8% siendo el enfoque que más se acerca a los datos experimentales reportados en literatura.
