A bibliometric profile of optogenetics: quantitative and qualitative analyses

Abstract: IntroductionOptogenetics is a rapidly developing field combining optics and genetics, with promising applications in neuroscience and beyond. However, there is currently a lack of bibliometric analyses examining publications in this area.MethodPublications on optogenetics were gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection Database. A quantitative analysis was conducted to gain insights into the annual scientific output, and distribution of authors, journals, subject categories, countries, and institutions. … Show more

“…Optogenetics is a rapidly developing field combining optics and genetics to control cellular activity using light. Compared with traditional pharmacologic treatment and electrical nerve stimulation, optogenetic modulation offers high spatial and temporal resolution and fewer off-target effects. Optogenetics has been primarily used to regulate neuronal cells, but it has also been applied to non-neuronal cells such as muscles, glial, stem, and endocrine cells. There have been recent attempts to apply optogenetics for bladder function modulation, enabling direct control of bladder detrusor muscle contraction and relaxation at the millisecond level .…”
