Technology-Based Psychosocial Interventions for People with Borderline Personality Disorder: A Scoping Review of the Literature

Evidence-based psychosocial interventions for borderline personality disorder (BPD) still face multiple challenges regarding treatment accessibility, adherence, duration, and economic costs. Over the last decade, technology has addressed these concerns from different disciplines. The current scoping review aimed to delineate novel and ongoing clinical research on technology-based psychosocial interventions for patients with BPD. Online databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Google Scholar) were searched up to June 2020. Technology-based psychosocial treatments included innovative communication (eHealth) and computational (e.g., artificial intelligence), computing (e.g., computer-based), or medical (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI]) software. Clinical research encompassed any testing stage (e.g., feasibility, efficacy). Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The main findings were the following: almost two-thirds of the studies (9/15) tested software explicitly conceived as adjunctive interventions to conventional therapy; nearly half of the studies (7/15) were referred to as dialectical behavior therapy-based software; most studies (13/15) were focused on the initial stage of the clinical research cycle (feasibility/acceptance/usability testing), reporting good results at this point; more than one-third of the studies (6/15) tested mobile apps; there is emerging evidence for Internet-based interventions and real-time fMRI biofeedback but only little evidence for mHealth interventions, virtual and augmented reality, and computer-based interventions; there was no computational technology-based clinical research; and there was no satisfaction/preference, security/safety, or efficiency testing for any software. Taken together, the results suggest that there is a growing but still incipient amount of technology-based psychosocial interventions for BPD supported by some kind of clinical evidence. The limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Towards a Science Map on Sustainability in Higher Education

This article analyses how the concept of sustainability is being incorporated into global research of higher education. This study utilizes different scientometric reviews of global research between 1991 and 2018 using text mining techniques in order to generate first and second-generation bibliometric indicators, the latter are displayed in science maps. A total of 6724 articles and conference proceedings were collected from the Web of Science and Scopus databases to generate this research. From the results obtained, it was possible to build a canvas of the main institutions that have significantly contributed to the topic of sustainability in higher education, and it was found that 40.58% of the records originated in institutions from the United States, China, United Kingdom, and Australia. This study also provides an insight into emerging trend themes, and patterns of research in the area of sustainability worldwide. Terms such as regional planning and environmental protection inside the top keywords found, suggest a greater interest in issues of sustainable planning and social awareness and that higher education is becoming the cornerstone of environmental awareness, innovation, and guidance to achieve sustainability goals in higher education institutions, as well as in society and government.Sustainability 2019, 11, 3521 2 of 18 both basic and applied, (c) campus operations, (d) community outreach, and (e) assessment and reporting. Similarly, Urquiza [7] proposes the labels of (a) education, (b) research, (c) public engagement, (d) operations, and (e) administration. By considering this frame of reference, it is possible to analyze each dimension in order to examine how sustainability has been integrated into higher education.The bibliometric method has been employed to study the research perspective in the area of sustainability and education, some of the most representative studies are: Bibliometric analysis of sustainability and sustainable development [8], evolution of collaborative economy business [9], the identification of emergent trends in education for sustainable development and ecopsychology in higher education [10], the mapping of tools to determine the implementation of sustainability in higher education [11] and the study of environmental education during the period 2001-2010 in Spain [12]. Ávila and co-workers reported a bibliometric analysis of sustainability and higher education from Web of Science (WoS) publications in the period between 2005 and 2014 [13]. Similarly, Hallinger and Chatpinyakoop conducted a bibliometric review related to the scientific production contained in Scopus regarding higher education and sustainable development in the period 1998-2018 [14]. Naturally, not all researchers can develop their own software to search for academic publications from digital libraries. Nevertheless, at several stages of their research, they will need to search digital libraries for relevant scientific publications and bibliometric information. There are typically two approaches used by researchers to search for scientific publications: (i) using Google Scholar search, or (ii) using publication metadata available from several sources, such as CrossRef and publishers. However, in developing countries like Indonesia, neither option provided users with complete information, since (i) Google Scholar does not provide bibliometric details, and (ii) complete bibliometric information from other sources is often not available due to incomplete data (e.g., CrossRef) or the necessity to pay a subscription fee (e.g., Springer and Elsevier). The development of Search Engine for Research Articles (SEforRA) is a solution to this issue which provides researchers with bibliometricready publication metadata. SEforRA extracts and processes data from CrossRef, publishers, and other sources to provide an integrated platform for researchers to search and retrieve publication metadata, which is ready to use further in their research.
