A Bibliographic Database for the History of Pilot Training Selection

Abstract: This report documents the development of and accumulation of a set of reference materials covering the history of U.S. aviator selection from the inception of military applied flight to the present day. It presents the materials so that they may be applied as a reference database or as a complete digital library for use by researchers in the field. The two DVDs containing the referenced material herein are maintained at AFPC/DSYX.

“…Third, the references sections of the collected articles were checked for additional AFOQT papers. Finally, previous meta-analyses and a narrative review that assessed pilot ability testing (e.g., Hunter & Burke, 1994; Lynch, 1991; Martinussen, 1996; Paullin, Katz, Bruskiewicz, Houston, & Damos, 2006) as well as Howse and Damos’s (2011) bibliographic database were inspected for more studies.…”

“…The reference lists of studies retrieved were reviewed for additional studies, which were subsequently obtained. Further, a manual search was carried out in the key journals in aviation, including The International Journal of Aerospace Psychology , Aviation Psychology and Applied Human Factors , and International Journal of Applied Aviation Studies , as well as in the annual conference abstracts presented by the International Military Testing Association and studies included in the Howse and Damos () bibliographic database.…”

“…We chose in this study to focus on the aviation occupation, one of the largest consumers of TBs, in an attempt to review the role of TBs' composite scores in selection and assessment, as well as to evaluate their utility and effectiveness for predicting future performance. We found aviation an appropriate field for this investigation due to the long history of TBs' use in pilot selection (e.g., Bates, Colwell, King, Siem, & Zelenski, ; Carretta, ; Damos, , ; Howse & Damos, ; Olson, Walker, & Phillips, ; Paullin, Katz, Bruskiewicz, Houston, & Damos, ; Retzlaff, King, & Callister, ; Russell, Reynolds, & Campbell, ), and the wide variety of tests available for the study that cover several domains of cognitive abilities commonly assessed during the pilot selection process.…”

“…The military itself has a long history of developing measures of mental ability or cognitive skills for personnel selection; beginning with World War I (Zeidner & Drucker, 1988). Efforts continue to the present to develop measures that will provide better selection tools for military branches and occupational specialties (e.g., Allen &Young, 2012;Heffner, Campbell, & Drasgow, 2011;Howse & Damos (2011); Knapp & Tremble, 2007;Zook, 1996). A variety of variables can be used for selection purposes.…”
