A Bi-national Analysis of 252 Pancreatic Resections for Chronic Pancreatitis with Regard to Incidental Carcinoma Sequence and Overall Postoperative Outcome

Abstract: The results of our study demonstrate that pancreatic resections for chronic pancreatitis may nowadays be considered technically feasible and safe. The high incidence of incidental pancreatic adenocarcinoma especially underlines the necessity for an early surgical therapeutic approach for these patients.

“…However, because there were many missing values and only five cases of PDAC, the regression model of risk factors was not successful in the group of patients without a pancreatic mass ( n = 110). Furthermore, the proportion (4.5%, 5/110) of patients with PDAC without a pancreatic mass was similar to the results of previous studies (5–7.1%) [ 32 , 33 ]. This may be due to the false image caused by the CP itself and the high proportion of cancer in the group of cases with pancreatic masses (29/94).…”

“…Secondly, PaCa may be an incidental nding of CP during pancreatic surgery. PaCa was found by histopathology in 7.1% of the CP surgical specimens reported by Malinka et al 29 . This was approximately equal to the rate in our study, in which the proportion of cases with PaCa detected during hospitalization was 7.0% among the articles that provided data on PaCa or death alone.…”
