A best practice fall prevention exercise program to improve balance, strength / power, and psychosocial health in older adults: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundWith increasing age neuromuscular deficits (e.g., sarcopenia) may result in impaired physical performance and an increased risk for falls. Prominent intrinsic fall-risk factors are age-related decreases in balance and strength / power performance as well as cognitive decline. Additional studies are needed to develop specifically tailored exercise programs for older adults that can easily be implemented into clinical practice. Thus, the objective of the present trial is to assess the effects of a fall… Show more

“…However, many rehabilitation and training centers use lower intensities (Ex. 50% of the maximum voluntary capacity) to promote muscular strength gains, as most patients might present important co-morbidities which impossibilities then to train with higher loads 12,13 . Meanwhile, during rehabilitation/ training progression, the applicability of heavier training loads may induce a more robust strength gain and nerve plasticity.…”

“…Although not completed elucidated the mechanisms associated with the type of exercise used in the rehabilitation and prevention of postural control and balance, the effects of exercise on postural control in other populations, especially the elderly, have been reported through in various protocols (30,31).…”

“…Fall down is one of the issues related to the geriatric health of the population (4) , considering that 30% of the older faller at least once a year and 50% will fall on a recurring basis (5) . In addition, it is the 6th leading cause of death in people over 65 and is considered the main cause of morbidity, loss of autonomy and quality of life in aging (6,7) . Postural balance is the result of the harmonic interaction between the vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems, and changes in these systems or in the interaction between them increases the risk of falls (8)(9)(10) .…”
