A bench arc-furnace facility for fullerene and single-wall nanotubes synthesis

Abstract: Recebido em 9/6/00; aceito em 21/3/01 A metallic-sample arc-furnace was modified to synthesize fullerenes and nanotubes. The (reversible) changes and the process for producing single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) are described.

“…Material (i) was purchased from Nanoledge; material (ii) was made by our group in an arc system similar to that 25, where helium at about half atmospheric pressure was used, producing a mixture of CNTs and soot. This "homemade" material was used without further purification.…”

“…The SWCNTs were produced by the arc-discharge method as reported in detail earlier 11 . The anode was a 6.2 mm diameter graphite rod, 100 mm long.…”

“…The advance rate was such as to reduce a 100 mm rod to a stub in about eight minutes. The soot from the collar was chosen as sample because it was found to be richer in SWCNTs than those from the cathode deposit or the interior walls 11 . The growth conditions were strictly the same for all samples.…”

“…Luengo (IFGW-Unicamp) was the first to synthesize single-walled nanotubes in Brazil. The experiments were done during the visit of J. G. Huber to Unicamp [21]. In 2000, the group of L. O. Ladeira (DF-UFMG) started the production of carbon nanotubes at UFMG using the arc discharge method and were able to produce single-wall nanotubes of high quality.…”
