A Behavioral Assessment of Tourism Transportation Options for Reducing Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gases

Abstract: This article outlines an approach for examining tourist-destination travel mode choices and forecasting the resulting environmental impact of those selections. Using the tourism destination of Whistler, British Columbia, as a case study, the article initially describes a discrete-choice experiment (DCE) used to estimate tourist mode-choice behavior under different transportation-planning scenarios. It then incorporates the DCE findings into a technical, bottom-up energy-use model to create behaviorally shaped … Show more

“…Longer stays suppose that tourists could visit more places, and it could increase their probability to use public transport. However, in some cases it has been reported an increasing of the use of private car for longer stays [51,52]. Repeating a stay on the Costa Daurada also increased the probability of the tourist using PT.…”

“…This suggests that a more convenient public transportation network could help to reduce TCO 2 . However, convenience may influence the choice of transportation mode, which may ultimately hinder the use of public transportation [35,36]. Train, bus, minibus, and HSR had an approximately 20% probability of use as the transportation mode.…”

“…Yu (2010) discusses China's energy development from the legislation and institutions. There are also some studies of the negative environmental impacts tourism based on qualitative judgments, such as Mathieson and Wall (1982), Mieczkowski (1995), Holden (2008, Prideaux et al (2003), Kelly et al (2007). However, few literatures make the quantitative research for the industrial development, especially tourism.…”
